I have a bachelor party in Vegas weekend around June 8. As a state highpoint guy i obviously immediately started thinking of bagging Boundary Peak & Mt Whitney. I always seem to have bad luck in June weather wise so wondering what it'll look like around this time and if it worth giving it a go. Would we be talking ice ax and crampons at this point above a certain line? I guess we won't know until closer but obviously with lottery process have to start planning now.

thanks all

June weather in the area is mostly clear and dry. But you need to watch forecasts closely. It is definitely worth planning the climbs, though.

Ice axe and crampons are likely to be quite helpful.

You would need a Whitney day hike permit, but in June, walk-ins are pretty easy to come by, but you would need to stop by the Lone Pine Visitor Center the morning before you hike. ...maybe on your way north to Boundary Pk.

"walk ins are pretty easy to come by"

But, Steve . . . isn't the announcement that walk in permits may be limited or denied based on road construction still relevant?

(I think so . . . this year the "norm" is not like it used to be, right?)

Thanks for that reminder, WF. With that in mind, maybe Jow should try for the lottery, and all that, to try for the exact permit he needs.

I am really hopeful they will figure out that they can give out the walk-in permits, but the walk-ins will NOT be given parking permits. (The reservation-holders will be given one parking permit per group). So walk-in, get a permit, arrange for a shuttle ride, and the hike is on!

This is hypothetical, but I trust they will come up with that idea.

If Jow is unsuccessful getting a reservation, then the parking issue might come into play.

But no shuttle service (Lone Pine to portal and vice versa) has really sprung up yet, right?

Giving permits coupled with that is the logical idea for sure. But we've got to see a shuttle service start up, right? One with posted times . . .

Business opportunity here? I'd do it but the commute to work would be really difficult.

Well, there are three existing shuttle services with their phone numbers posted in the first post of the Road Construction thread.   Of course those would be way more costly than a regular shuttle run.

Yeah, I was aware of those options, but they are impractical as you note.

Here's hoping someone comes up with something. (Wagga is excused.)
