Unbelievable!!! 'Attitude' sickness halted Denali climberCroatian was healthy but demanded airlift at 14,200 feetBy BETH BRAGG bbragg@adn.com Published: May 20th, 2010 12:13 PM Last Modified: May 20th, 2010 12:13 PM For six days last May on Mount McKinley, a climber from Croatia played chicken with Denali National Park rangers and volunteers. She was at 14,200 feet with no apparent injury or illness, but she insisted she wasn't going to walk off the mountain and demanded she be given air transportation. Rangers were willing to do just about anything, short of an air evacuation, to help her down.More here: http://www.adn.com/2010/05/19/1286141/attitude-sickness-halted-denali.html
The body betrays and the weather conspires, hopefully, not on the same day.

Wow! That's incredible. Have Sat phone, will whine!
Similar to the Grand Canyon Spot 911 calls made due to water tasting salty.
Here's the best part:
A late-night satellite-phone call from Luca-Mrden to family or friends in Croatia, who then called someone they knew in Tacoma, who then called the 911 operator there, who then transferred the call to Alaska operators, who then called Leonard, who then reached Chenoweth at 14,200 feet. At 2 a.m., Chenoweth went from his tent to Luca-Mrden's, about a hundred meters away, where a head-to-toe assessment revealed pain in the woman's arch. "The 911 call provided her with a hot-water bottle,"

Me, I would'a left her sorry butt at 14,200' till she saw the light and ambulated her own way down. But I guess that's why I'm not a ranger. I have little patience for this type of resource abuse, plus I score pretty low on the laziness/whining empathy scale. High-maintenance, would-be divas have no business on a mountain like Denali.

That $5K fine that she didn't pay was pretty small. Ten times that would make more sense. And, of course, it would have been nice to be able to yank her passport before she skipped town.
I wonder how helo pickup works in Croatia? Free for people with sore feet? Somehow, I doubt it.

If the other guy hadn't actually needed a rescue, there probably wouldn't have been a helicopter for her to hitch a ride on. I wonder how long they would have provided room service to her in her borrowed tent.
Bulldog34 got it right.

Thanks 'Tude. Not my thing normally, but a couple of uncharacteristic cocktails during a protracted business lunch sort'a got the creative juices flowing.
By the way - we're locked and loaded for Cali in July. Nailed down air this morning, so we're committed. A week in Mammoth/Yosemite, then down to Lone Pine and the Portal the 14th-18th. Joe (quillansculpture) and I hope to head up Whitney the 15th and back down the 16th, assuming the permit gods smile upon us. We'll be looking for that reserved beer at your Portal campsite the afternoon/evening of the 16th!

Nah - we better not go there. That's for sure.
If future generations are to remember us with gratitude rather than contempt, we must leave them more than the miracle of technology. We must leave them a glimpse of the world as it was in the beginning, not just after we got through with it. - Lyndon Johnson, on signing the Wilderness Act into law (1964)
