We are going on a 2 night trip in late July with trail camp as our base camp. What are the average temperatures during the night at trail camp. I understand storms can roll in and temps can quickly drop, but would a 40 degree bag, warm socks, and a down jacket be sufficient for most average people. I do sleep slightly warm and have used my 40 degree bag comfortably in 35 degree weather with wind.

If you're inside a tent or bivy sack, it should be fine. Outside, you're ok unless there is lots of wind or foul weather.

I think temps are normally above freezing overnight that time of year.

Steve's advice is sound. If I am driving to Whitney, I take extra warmies and colder rated bag that I can either pack or leave in the car depending on latest weather forecast before hitting the trail.
