What is the best way to get to and from the portal with the construction? I plan on leaving around 2 am and returning the following day after an overnight. I see that people are recommending shuttles but I want to make sure I'm set. Its a long walk down to LP. Thanks

Construction schedule is Mondays-Thursdays, 6:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
The rest of the time there should be no flagman. If there is any single-lane work, that would cause 24-hour flagman, but I don't think that is going to be the case.
If you have a reserved permit, you should have a parking pass for the parking lot for your trip, and theoretically, the construction won't affect you at all.

Thank you for the follow up Steve. To clarify, does that mean they provide you with a parking permit when you pick up your hiking permit?
Thanks, Eric

That is what Inyo staff have been telling me.

One more note of caution, though:
Even though you get a parking pass from the Visitor Center in Lone Pine when you pick up your trail permit, it may not guarantee you a parking spot. Inyo N.F. cautions that at times, the parking lots may be completely full, with no space available for those holding a parking pass.

Since I typically go for the "walk in permit" I checked out the cost of shuttle service. East Side Sierra Shuttle offers rides for: - from Lone Pine: $65 plus $20/extra passenger. - And to leave at 2:00 AM an additional $100.00. So, for one person, leaving at 2:00 AM the total would be $165.00
While a bit expensive, in consideration of the total cost of one of these hikes not really so much. In particular since you have no worries about finding parking.

Or take a ticket. Actually, without giving out any names - cough, Amy - a resourceful person could simply contact one of the many "outdoors" businesses in LP. If you've been there, or even looked at a Google map with pins, you know what I'm talking about. These businesses have handfuls of employees who will be happy to shuttle you for a little $ dinero.

I suppose it could happen, but I would hate to be out on the road to the portal with my thumb out, hoping someone will stop at 2:00 AM. I agree on hitching on the return, but on the 2:00 AM departure? I think not. Hobbes, you must really have a silver tongue. 2:00 AM, and 90 minutes up and back is a lot to ask for 5 of anything. I'd like to hear that conversation

Found This : Mount Whitney Golf Course now has designated long and short term parking for hikers... we felt that it would be beneficial for everyone because of the road construction coming up this summer... Our fee is $10 a day... $25 a week... $75 month. Please contact Mt Whitney golf course 760-876-5795 Posted at http://climber.org/driving/WhitneyArea.html
Wherever you go, there you are. SPOTMe!

Perhaps picking up permits would be a good time for small groups to meet up with other small groups to arrange carpooling? Maybe noticeboards somewhere? A link on this forum perhaps?
