Going to Vegas in a few weeks and would like some info on hiking Red Rock Canyon. If you have some nice spots, let me know.
Thanks!

I have not been to RRC. But years ago, I explored Valley of Fire state park, about an hour north of Las Vegas. Pretty nice red sandstone formations, easy climbing and exploring.

But don't go mid-day when it's hot!!! ...or run on a little more north and swim in Lake Mead.

Joe, been there a couple of times but haven't done much real hiking since Brianne was really young both times. This seems to be a good list of available trails - I think I've wandered the two Calico trails, but not much beyond that.

DO expect it to be hot as hell in the summer, brother. No elevation to cool things off. Hydrate often and pretend you're in Death Valley.

If it's too damn hot, consider driving 45 minutes northwest to Mt. Charleston (about 11K'). Nice road up to about 8500 feet and a multitude of trailheads. Shaded forest and much cooler temps.

When will you be in Vegas? We fly in there 7/8.

Here's a shot from back in summer 2003 when we were there. There's a reason we're all wearing white shirts - 117 degrees that day:

And you all look so cool and clean! You must have hopped out of the car where the A/C was running full blast, and taken the picture. grin

Dry heat, Steve! Also, a normal summer 98-degree, 75% humidity day here = well, let's just say 117 super-dry degrees doesn't feel that bad coming from a steam bath. Brianne wasn't happy with it, though - you can tell by her expression. Three probably wasn't the right age for that experience.

Joe... Icebox Canyon... the secondcalico trail has some nice petroglyphs easily accessible from the trail... almost any of the pullouts (if you can find a parking spot) are worthy of wandering in...

Valley of Fire has some nice wanderings too.

If I can get my stoopid pictures from Spring Break organized and cooperating I'll put a link here for you to gander at. My Boy Scouts and leaders did RRC, Zion, VOF for spring break in March.

Try these LINKS:

Hike along the Calico Hills in Red Rock Canyon (moderate)

Red Rock Canyon Turtlehead Peak hike (difficult, in snow)

Red Rock Canyon's North Peak and Bridge Mtn. difficult hike (old YouTube upload in poor quality)

The videos below are from Turtlehead Peak in spring. 1 & 2 = start, 3 = somewhere on the way up, 4,5 & 6 are at the top. The hike is difficult, 5 miles round-trip. Allow at leasts 3 hours to do it.
