There has been a lot of repeated discussion in this forum regarding micro-spikes vs. crampons on Mt. Whitney. Some of the advice being handed out in this forum, even by some experienced hikers who post a lot here, might be misleading at best.

On Mt. Whitney, in the current conditions, or when there is ice on the switchbacks or last section before the summit, crampons are the only safe way to go. If in doubt, carry both and use as necessary. Or...as Bob R has written, save the microspikes for shoveling the driveway at home.
