Hi there,
My husband and son went up to Mt. Whitney two days ago and plan on coming down today. Since reception is bad, I haven't heard anything about their adventures. Both hikers are named Marty. One is eight years old. Has anyone met them yet? Did they make it to the top? Excited to hear all about it!

Hi there,
I don't mean to alarm anyone but my son (8yrs.old) and my husband were supposed to be home yesterday. They may have needed to stay an extra day, but I haven't heard from them. Does anyone know or has anyone seen a man traveling with his blonde haired, eight year old son? My husband has long hair and wears it in a ponytail. At what point do I start to get nervous? Thanks!!

My husband and son are both named Marty. They went to the Whitney Portal on Monday and then off to Whitney.

You can call the Inyo Sheriff Dept. at 760-873-7887 or 760-878-0383 for assistance. They can send an officer to Whitney Portal to see if their vehicle is there, and contact SAR if necessary.

They might just be going slow due to the trail conditions.

I did see a man with a boy around 8 just before Trailside Meadow at around 9.30 or 10am yesterday. They started to walk up the direct snow path to trail camp but then stopped and sat on a rock, presumably to eat, drink. I was headed down at that time.
I think the man had a camouflaged style back pack and the boy a small back pack.

Any further word on this Kacie?

Hoping for the best outcome. But... a few questions:

Are they doing an overnight attempt on Whitney that ended yesterday? Or a day hike where they were only hiking yesterday? Sometimes multi-day treks take longer than

Were they camping at the Portal? If so, and they haven't come down the hill today, they just might not have cell service.

Please keep us updated.

Thanks Snacking Bear.
I haven't heard anything yet. If anyone else sees or hears them, please let them know that they need to contact me on my cell. I contacted the ranger station and they told me to contact the sheriff. So the sheriff is keeping his eyes open for them. Both Marty's went up Monday night and spent the night at the Portal Hostel. They began their hike on Tuesday. They were only supposed to camp Tuesday night and come home Wednesday. I'm hoping the trail put them behind, causing them to stay an extra night somewhere. I will for sure keep you and everyone posted. Thanks for asking!

Of course, if that is the case there is a decent chance that they took a little longer and spent an extra night.

It happens all the time.

For now, you've done well by contacting the Sherriff's Dept.

Hi Kacie,

Please post a picture of the two of them, and an exact itinerary, with routes and the location they planned to camp at on the 11th.
There has been some monsoonal moisture effecting the Sierra all this week, which means thunderstorms and rain, were they aware of this? This could have delayed them. Any info you can provide on their clothing and equipment they were carrying (tent and pack makes and color, color of clothing)would be helpful to get the word out on the outdoor forums, hopefully someone out at the same time, saw them, and will report it to Inyo Co. Sheriff's Dept.

Have posted this on our board too: http://www.highsierratopix.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=16240

Hi all,
Marty and Marty are OK!! They stayed an extra night to be safe, since our son had altitude sickness and they were caught in a rainstorm. They are down the mountain and safe. He called me as soon as he had reception. Thank you everyone!!

I just looked up the site and we'll have to use it next year. My husband said that our son was physically ready to go all the way, but because of his altitude sickness and other delays, they will do it next year. We'll have to use it then for sure!
Thanks,
-Kacie

I second using the reconn form. My friend and I used it for my ascent in 2014 and left a copy at home, and with the front desk at the Hostel where we were staying.
