I called the Inyo National Forest's Wilderness Permit telephone number, 760-873-2483 and finally got through. I've called half a dozen times, and here's how it usually goes:

1. The line connects, you hear a recording, inviting you to press zero to speak to a live person.

2. Press zero, the line starts ringing. Ten rings, and it disconnects!

So that's the problem--there is no wait queue, no long-term hold system in place. I was told that there is no plan to change the disconnect.

All you can do is re-dial, press zero at the recording, hope that someone picks up in that first minute. Then repeat.

I was looking for a chance to do one more 14er before my June 26 Backpacking trip. I called 760-873-2500 (White Mountain Ranger District) and got a long-winded recording that ended with an invitation to press 0 to talk to a real person. Pressing 0 just repeats the long-winded recording. Forever.

The Inyo National Forest website also lists 760 873-2483 for trail conditions. I called it and got through on the first ring. I asked my questions and, as I expected, they didn’t have much information on access to Langley, Split, or White Mountain Peak. But I did talk to a real person and get some answers.
