Cancelled a solo overnight permit for the night of July 9th. Just don’t feel comfortable going solo given all the snow, particularly given what happened. Will try in a drier year, hopefully in a group. Hope someone on here can make use of the permit, and thanks to everyone for advice, updates, and photos.

mark, "what happened" was rare. The solo hiker either intentionally or by mistake, headed down the north side of the mountain from the summit, completely opposite from the side he came up. Nearly all fatalities are due to lone hikers heading off in the wrong direction, and that happens more frequently in the darkness while descending. The risk of those things happening are rare, and can be minimized if you are well aware of those issues.

The mountain will always be here -- stay in shape, and you can come next year. ...or later this year: Note how there are usually permits to pick up on recreation.gov just a day or two before the hike date.

Anyone have any clue based on past experience how the snow is going to look at the end of July?

It'll be fine. Poles will be all you will need to traverse any small sections of remaining snow on the trail.

check back next year; i kinda go yearly in July or whatever. 48yo here, sometimes i bring my oldest girl. would def team up with anyone.

wish you would've asked around. i'm going in on an overnight on 7/8 frown second solo try; third overall.

my first solo i ended up teaming up with a nice foursome from WI! and we supported each other greatly.

wish you the best next try.

Hey do you have a spare permit? I may be able to go given that you can go up the switchbacks because I don’t have snow skills.
