Has anyone noticed the small campsite to the North side of the trail about .2 mile after you start the accent from the junction? I mention this for those going up the west side of Whitney. I got to guitar lake early and decided to do the switchbacks that day instead of waking up at 3AM and freezing my a** off. It makes for an easy summit and then back down to one of the other camps or out the portal. There are room for about 5-6 tents.

Thanks Mark.

Someone in my Cottonwood Pass to Whitney and Back thread mentioned this spot, I believe.

Is it this?

If so, depending on how my hike from Rock Creek to Guitar Lake goes, I thought about doing the same thing you did. Any pictures?

Overall, how were temps? Mountain-forecast says it's about 30-40 at the summit but I have not had much luck with that site's accuracy in the past.

Sorry, but not really a secret.

My favourite spot!

Further advantages include:
1) You don't waste any time packing your kit up pre-summit hike; you can roll out of bed, pull your shoes on and start hiking.
2) Your tent is dry by the time you get back to it post-summit, rather than carrying a wet tent all day.
3) You've had a nice extra dose of acclimatisation
4) You get to feel really smug as you look down at the string of head-torches winding their way slowly up the mountain...

I don't think I said or implied that it was a secret. Apology accepted.

Hi Mike,
Temps were in the high 30’s at night. Top of Whitney was 65* when I summited, but that was at noon.
