We, a group of 4 made it to Whitney on Friday Sept 27, 2019. Great weather. Clear skies. Summit was chilly. The trail was pretty much clear all the way. There was still some snow near the summit. There was some ice on the cables section. It is easily avoidable and the hiking poles were a big help there.
We started around 11:00PM Thursday night 9/26 from the Whitney Portal and summited at 10 am Friday morning 9/27/19. We walked slowly and in a relaxed manner with headlights, taking breaks as needed and were at switchback cables before sunrise. It was a good decision that we took, to make that early start. We were all focused on the path and never felt the distance or the massive scale of the mountain that we had to traverse, due to the darkness of the night. The star studded night sky was a beauty of its own.
We watched the sun rise by the mountains from the switchbacks. Golden, pure and was extremely beautiful with the first rays of the sun.
There were very few hikers when we reached the summit. Met so many fellow hikers on the way who are very friendly and willing to talk and share experiences.
All of us started taking DIAMOX 2 days before hiking since we had no time to acclimate and had no AMS. We made a mistake of carrying extra pounds of water and food. We carried nearly 6 liters of fluid, not necessary at all, along with the extra food which made our backpacks heavy.
Thanks to whitneyzone.com for all your valuable information which I followed for long time during my preparation. The forecast provided by
www.mountain-forecast.com/peaks/Mount-Whitney/forecasts/4418
is accurate and we highly recommend it to refer before the hike.
Happy Summiting!!!
