2 women killed by falling rock on Red Slate Mountain, CA . Rescuers found the women still anchored into the ice by their equipment high up in the steep Icy couloir ! Here is article and link....Rescuers recovered the bodies of two women who were killed in a rock slide while climbing an icy, steep and narrow canyon on Red Slate Mountain earlier this week, according to the Mono County Sheriff’s Office.

Volunteers with the Mono County Search and Rescue Team found the bodies of 34-year-old Jennifer Shedden of Mammoth Lakes and 22-year-old Michelle Xue of Los Angeles on Monday, authorities said in a news release on Wednesday.

Shedden and Xue set out Saturday on a backcountry excursion from Convict Lake, intending to return Sunday evening.

Their friends reported them overdue, and Mono County Search and Rescue sent out a team. The California Highway Patrol also deployed a helicopter.

The women were spotted midway down a steep couloir at about 12,400 feet on Monday and were presumed dead. Recovery efforts were then delayed until Tuesday because of impending darkness, high winds and steep terrain.

The next morning, a National Guard CH-47 helicopter airlifted a search and rescue team, and three climbers made their way up the couloir. They faced falling rock, but eventually, they found the women still anchored into the ice by their equipment.

“It appeared that the women, though very prepared and well equipped, were struck by (a) large rockfall event at an unknown time on their route,” authorities said in the news release.

With rocks still falling and daylight quickly fading, the rescue team determined they could not safely lower the bodies without endangering themselves or the other team members waiting below.

On Wednesday, Yosemite Search and Rescue deployed a helicopter that was able to airlift two rescuers onto the ice field and extract the bodies, which were transported to Mammoth Airport, where the women's parents and friends had gathered.

“The Mono County Sheriff’s Office holds Jennifer, Michelle and their families and friends in our hearts and thoughts during this difficult time,” authorities said in a statement on Wednesday. Some commented ..." it was like recovering ourselves " ...Many climbing accidents in Europe right now , with the same falling rock and ice issues... One way to avoid rock and Ice Falls is to climb ice climbs at nite with full moons ( European method )...I have done this many times over the years ... such as V notch, Mendel left and right , U notch, and Mt. Whitney Mountaineering Route , etc. etc...But.. we were well prepared ( at least we thought so ) and Very lucky . May God Be with them . Be safe outdoors People !! Sierra Angler

Good article. Good reminder on what risks are unavoidable in the mountains.
