Wow!!!...
Quote:
Visitors who want to spend the day at the famed Sierra Nevada destination would need a reservation and crowds would be limited to roughly half of normal.

I guess this is what it has come to... Not just reservations to hike Half Dome, but also just to enter the park!

I can’t wait to see how this will work. Is my reservation free because of my Senior Pass? I’m planning a 27-mile dayhike in early July. Will I need to show my reservation when I drive in at 4:30 AM? Will they check it again when I drive out after 9:00 PM? Will they check my car at the trailhead to make sure I display my receipt?

I'd expect the reservation process to run on holiday periods only at first, but since it's Yosemite, you never know.

I doubt that. There would only be two holiday periods left this summer (July 4th and Labor Day).

They're likely to run it all summer and into fall, otherwise people will flood in (remember what happened when they made it free in March before closing?).

Plus Yosemite is busy enough during summer, after being closed for so long there will be a lot of pent up demand for it.

Jim, I would love for you to be wrong, but I'll bet you aren't.

I wonder if you would need a reservation to park outside the park and do a quick hike up Mount Dana. Or does this only apply to driving in?

As long as you don't walk right up to the entrance station, you should be fine. I would hike the first 100 yards to the east of the park boundary, just to be sure.

I parked at the parking lot on the side of the road before the entrance station. I walked up to the ranger at the entrance station and
asked if I needed to pay to just hike Mt Dana (I was obviously was not thru-hiking) and he said naw just go at it.
If I was hiking with my dog (was taking a guided course the next day), I would do what Bob said and bypass the entrance station.

I’m not too concerned about paying since I have an ATB Pass. It’s more the quotas that would be an issue. Of course, if there are quotas to get in the park, I would also have to contend with making the longer drive on 395 to get to the entrance. But that’s a whole other issue altogether.

Looks like Yosemite is reopening on or around June 11:
https://www.mercurynews.com/2020/06/03/yosemite-national-park-settles-on-reopening-date/

Until then, you can legally attend a mass protest in a major metropolitan area (masks not required) if you don't loot or violate curfew, but hiking Mt. Lyell is prohibited.
