On my bigger hikes/climbs, I've been wrapping some sports tape around my knees to help stabilize them and reduce pain. It's definitely helped keep me going and reduced pain in comparison when I don't use it.

I've been thinking a brace of some kind might be better (especially for my JMT hike in August).

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

This seems to be a good option, and can be adjusted like the sport tape to get the right feeling.

It depends on what your knee problems are. If it is patellar tendonitis, the smaller brace you showed is fine (though you can find cheaper options for similar items away from REI). If you have patellar tracking issues where your kneecap likes to move, I think a lateral J style brace works best. My go-to is the Hely&Weber Shields for that. Good luck!

I have good results from the Cho Pat Knee Strap. It has a band across both the upper and and lower knee to stabilize the tendons.

I used to have great success on my Nepal treks with the basic ACE Brand Knitted Knee Brace w/ Side Stabilizers ($8 each at Walmart). Be sure to upsize one size bigger.
Now I use the KT Tape Pro Extreme Therapeutic Elastic Kinesiology for even better results (but more pricy than the reusable Ace braces). They lasted my entire Three Passes trek in Nepal 3 months ago. I didn't even feel them (be sure to shave your skin first).
Good luck.
