I just got an email from our group leader saying that she might not be able to go on the hike with us. Does anyone know what happens in such a dilemma? I know that she is the only one who can pick up the permit, but do you know if she can pick it up days before the hike? Cindy

Thanks to COVID-19, they are not issuing permits in person. Your leader can get it by email. They require the leader to be on the trip to prevent scalping. She can give it to you, but if they check the permit, and she isn’t there, you’re in trouble. Did she designate an alternate leader on the original permit application? If so, that person can take the place of the leader.

Any idea what happens if our leader only makes it so far? Can the rest of the group continue?

Both times I've done the whitney trail our group leader tapped out early. We were stopped by a ranger on both trips and asked for our permits. We showed them our individual passes (which we attached to our bags) and explained that our group leader went back down. It was a non-issue. Unless they stopped giving all hikers some sort or pass you should be good. As long as you are respectful they arent going to give you problems. They can't expect everyone to be together at all times.

I’ve added a second leader after booking the permits. You can do it from the Recreation.gov account of the main leader.

Wait! I didn't know you could do that. I've only read that while applying for the permit is when you can add alternates.
