In the past I’ve been lucky enough to walk into the interagency and obtain an unclaimed permit for a hike the following day. Is that not possible this year? Any information on how to obtain a walk in permit? Thanks.

They changed the system to online-only reservations in 2018 or 2019. No walk-in permits this year. frown

You need to try your luck on recreation.gov/Mt Whitney

Unfortunately they aren't updating that site with the no-shows, etc, this year due to the complications with COVID-19. I think some permits do show up on that site occasionally, but it is rare and random.

Good luck with that. I've checked that page maybe 300 times these past couple of weeks, and only twice did I see permits available for my target date (July 28). But my persistence paid off as I got everyone in our group a permit. You definitely have to keep checking because you never know when something will open up, and they usually get reserved shortly afterwards (~20 min).

I saw open day hike permits for tomorrow (July 17) earlier this week. They were all taken in about 10-15 minutes. However, I haven't seen any weekend permits even for solo day hikers despite checking that site pretty regularly over the past few weeks. Those are incredibly rare.
