Who is in charge of the Mt Whitney webcam? It has been down since 11/16/20 and I miss checking it.

I am. I'm in Fresno, so can't get over there easily. Need to set up a new computer to run it, as the old one is extremely behind current technology. But the other issue is that due to COVID, the Film History museum is closed, so they aren't maintaining their internet. I don't think I could even get access, if I went to Lone Pine.

I'll try to get things working in the next few months.

Note that the Williamson webcam is down, too. Nobody works in the building any more, where it is housed, so they can't reset things when it shuts down. Covid has been hard on the web cams.

Thanks a lot Steve! I figured it was something like that.
Hope you can get it working this spring. By then a lot of us should be vaccinated, so places will be opening up again, I hope!

Do you have a computer already? I'd be willing to put some cash towards being able to see whitney and williamson again.

Hi all,

I am happy to report that I got the Whitney webcam working today. Finally!! New (to the webcam, but 5-year old) laptop. The laptop was retired during COVID due to it's sound card/microphone failing, but it runs the webcam software perfectly. It's been so long since i worked on things that it took many hours to get the thing configured the way I wanted it. I drove over last night, and installed everything this morning.

The crazy thing is that the little power supply unit to the camera--runs 5.25 volts DC--failed, so I has to replace it. Fortunately I had a spare, but that added to all the difficulty.

After getting that running, I visited the Mt Williamson motel people, and they are excited about hosting the Willi-Cam from their location. That would definitely be better, as someone will always be on-site if anything goes wrong. At its current location, sometime it takes weeks to get someone to check and see why it went off-line.

If you want to see the current pictures, you always need to refresh the page on your browser. I cannot figure out how to set up the thumbnails (or the main pictures for that matter), so the browser always pulls up the latest picture.

Here's what the webcam looks like:

Once all was fixed -- a webcam selfie while standing on the roof of the Lone Pine Museum of Film History.
