Not to hijack the thread, but any thoughts on ditching the boots and hiking in cross trainers? I've never tried it, but I think it may give me the edge I need to complete OV-WP in under 24 hours. I'll be going insanely light, but my feet are used to those old, clunky Lowa gortex boots. I think I might try a hike on San J in my favorite treadmill shoes and see what happens.

Any advice on socks? Lacing? Feet swelling?

Thanks...............................................DUG

Very interesting. My wife's second toes are longer than her "big" toes, and she has had Morton's Neuroma (MN) surgery on both feet within the past year or two for long-existing MN.

If future generations are to remember us with gratitude rather than contempt, we must leave them more than the miracle of technology. We must leave them a glimpse of the world as it was in the beginning, not just after we got through with it.

DUG, most long-distance long-term hikers skip the boots and hike in trail runners. I do that for long day hikes.

I think it also helps to use Body Glide or another anti-chafing product - put it on all over your feet, including between your toes.

Interesting discussion re: the sock liners. I started using silk ones, thinking that would be a good addition to my standard wool socks, but my feet seem more sweaty using them. So I think I may switch back to no liners.
