We plan on arriving around 7pm on sunday 5/23, dayhiking on 5/24.

I have seen some conflicting posts regarding the backpacker's campground near the trailhead being closed.

I am looking for a campsite that is preferably within walking distance to the trailhead.

Where is the best spot to camp before a dayhike?

Thanks! I will be posting photos of the trail conditions after our hike.

The best spot to camp is in your car. It'll save you time getting up and breaking camp.

Now, I posted this info a while back. It will help you making your decision.................... See below

The backpacker walkin sites are closed due to a major rock side last year. However, I think Jim maybe referring to the Ravine campground. The Ravine campground is located down from the overflow parking lot. You access the campground at the overflow parking lot. It is a walkin site built along the old road.

Below are some links: https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/inyo/recarea/?recid=20704 Notice at the top of the page, is says "Closed."

Here is a link to some info on the Ravine Campground: https://www.outdoorproject.com/united-states/california/whitney-ravine-walk-campground

Thanks for your response. camping in the car sounds great! Except we are going to have 7 people in a minivan, haha. Not possible to all sleep in the car.

The ravine campground sounds like a great option! We are arriving on a Sunday evening so hopefully we are able to get a spot there.

Looks like there is availability at the Whitney Portal Campground on the night of the 23rd and 24th. This might be a good choice if (1) you would rather stretch out in your tent than be cramped in your car, (2) you need space for several people in your group, (3) you would rather have a reserved site ready for you than have to scramble and risk having nothing, and (4) you want to stay the night up there after your hike (walk-in sites are usually only one night).
