I have an overnight permit for July 25. I thought it was going to be emailed to me this year. Is that incorrect? Do we still need to go to the Visitor Center to pick up the permit?

You can also arrange to have your permit left in the night box at the gazebo in front of the Eastern Sierra Visitor Center. This way, you are not stuck NEEDING to be at the Eastern Sierra Visitor Center during business hours to pick up your permit.

Samanthia, please find the Permit Pickup. It tells you how to pick up your permit.

Hello,
Is it true that walkup permits are not available for 2021 and permits can be obtained only online?

All permits through Inyo National Forest, including all Mt Whitney permits, are only available online through recreation.gov.

The old process does not exist: Waiting in line and then asking the desk ranger if anything is available. This year, and likely from now on, you need to keep refreshing the page on rec.gov, and hope that a permit will come available. I've been told by Inyo staff that no-show permits do indeed show up online this year.

For day hike permits, the no-shows should become available the day before. As I write this (12:45 pm), there are two day hike permits available for the Main Mt Whitney Trail for tomorrow. Curiously, there are no overnight permits currently available, even though there were quite a few during the walk-up process.

Based on posts in the Mt. Whitney facebook group there are LOTS of folks religiously checking for cancellations daily/hourly/minutely especially this year now that it's more 'known' how the system works.

Also for the previous poster - the old 'walkup' permits that weren't reservable at 6 months out are now available online 2 weeks (14 days) from the start date online only. And frequently get snatched up right away at that 14 day out date for more popular trails.

=)tif

What does a W mean in the current system?

For example, if I want to go in via kearssrge, do I keep hitting refresh until an A comes up?

Does this mean that all trailheads are now actually 100% reserveable?

I got my permit issued on the 4th try this morning. No response to email from last week. On the successful try, I did not hit 0 after calling the Wilderness Permit line. Not sure if that made a difference.

Those are the reserved 'walk up' permits that are now available 14 days out online.
