Hi, this is my first post here, but I've read y'all talking for a long time. I've climbed Mt Whitney for the first time last September on the Mountaineer's Route (camped at Iceberg Lake), and I'm contemplating climbing it again end of this month (April), overnight via the Whitney Trail. I understand that a permit is still required even though it's outside the quota season (which starts on May 1). Now if I go to https://www.recreation.gov/permits/233260, it currently shows availability only through April 11, but not thereafter. I'm trying to understand why there is no availability between April 12 and April 30. Can someone explain?

or https://photos.app.goo.gl/J3DjWkCfEoVGHVvR6 if the above link doesn't work.

The permits may be available only 2 days in advance due to a policy rule. You should call the Inyo National Forest wilderness permit office and ask. 760-873-2483.

I know they hold Trail Pass permits back because they want people to call and talk with a ranger about their plans -- people were trying to hop on the JMT northbound on that trail, which is not allowed. So they want to talk with every person getting a permit.

They may want to talk to you regarding the main trail to make sure you know of the closed gate and the snow hazards of hiking so early in the season. Or it may be that they release the permits to the online system manually a few days at a time. Call and ask. Please post what you find out here.

Steve C is correct, I just got off the phone with them and I think due to conditions and the road closure they want people to call first.

It was quick and easy, they just gave me the warning that it's "full winter conditions" and the "road is closed" after which they just unlocked a permit for me to immediately go grab on rec.gov.
