Hello, we're attempting the Mountaineer's Route for the first time in late May and I'm considering some of the variations. Does anyone have any advice or photo/video from the alternate slab route above Lower Boy Scout Lake? I haven't found much description except for "exposed class 3" but how much added risk is it really? Seems like it would be a more enjoyable way to go compared to the talus.

I have good experience and comfortable with slab and exposure, but also I don't want to start up this way and have to back track if it's not a good way to go.

As far as I know this is used mainly as a way to avoid some of the sand slog up to Mt. Russell (from Upper BSL). I doubt is would save you any time/distance to Whitney. Also, I have read trip reports that mention "cliffing out" while going this way. Do a search on Mt. Russell route options.

This is not going to save you any time. In fact it's going to cost you a lot of time and energy. I would climb the MR, and if you have the interest, explore these slabs for fun as a detour on the way down.
