Hi hikers,

Any walk-in permits experience with tryin luck? recreation.gov shows all quota season fully booked, should I call lone pine office? We (4) plan to climb October 3-4, I guess chances are better than summer..

There are no walk-in permits anymore. Everything is online through Recreation.gov. Here's the link

I just visited the site, and by setting up the entry point (Overnight or Day-Use), and number of hikers, and then clicking between the overnight and day-use permits, a permit for 2 under day-use just showed up for Friday. (Now it's gone, but one for next Tue showed up.) If you check that web page frequently, you just might get lucky.

There are lots and lots of people who won lottery permits whose plans change, or members drop from their group. When they go to finally pick up their permits, their unused slots show up online (at a random time in the next 24 hours). So you have to keep checking.

Thanks Steve,

Have plenty of time refreshing page laugh I guess no need to show up in some lone pine office as before, grab available permission, print it, and hike.

At this point in time, all you can do is look for cancellations. I would look EVERY DAY, perhaps a couple of times a day, until you get the permits you want. There are a couple of things to keep in mind. First, the more flexible you are in terms of date, the better. Most likely, you will find permits around those dates at SOME point. But you may not find them EXACTLY on those dates. If you can do your hike within the time frame of a week, chances are MUCH better. Secondly, those dates (or others around it) will more likely open up as you approach them. It is usually within a few days to a couple of week that people have to cancel plans. So don’t get too worried just because nothing is available NOW. Do keep looking every day, however.

Thanks Matt,

After flying half globe would be nice to secure some spots. Yes, we are flexible a bit, I see that I have to collect one by one available permits within 2-3 days range if we wanna climb as a group of 4. I guess one have 4-5 days extension to reach the summit.

Cancelled permits will likely show up just a day or two in advance of the hike date. It is most that permits would show up more than 2 weeks before the hike date.

Steve,

Usually I see 1-2 spots available 1-3 days in advance. However, what if a group size is larger, say 4? No permits are available then, so should I collect them one by one somehow by creating other .gov accounts with groups of 1 or 2 people?

Thanks

There is a way to add hikers to your party -- if slots are available. So if you had 2 slots, saw two more, that would complete your group... if you are quick.

Or get another hiker in your party to sign up as a leader, and grab the slots.
