With mid July just around the corner, it's going to be hard to predict however with this heat wave coming, anything is possible. We are anxiously watching this upcoming month with hopes of a massive melt (with minimal flooding down below), our descent down (we are coming up from the JMT side) the switchbacks won't be until late August, and even then we are nervously/cautiously optimistic. Last year we were up there on almost this exact date and it was bone dry, but like how almost everyone likes to remind us all daily about the "record snow melt", nothing is normal. What we're doing is watching trip reports, watching Facebook posts (got to filter through all incessant preaching by the group admin), and YouTube videos. Some PCT hikers have been exiting via Whitney Portal recently, so there should be a wealth of information coming in the next few weeks to determine just how good/bad things are.
I follow a guy on YouTube called "Pacific Northwest Weather Watch", I feel he's the exhaustive authority on what's hitting the entire west coast, we start watching him many weeks out from the start of our trips to get a solid idea of the conditions that are brewing. He's a lot more technical than your basic TV weatherman, I've learned a lot of how patterns develop and impact regions from watching him religiously. And as of this morning's video, it looks like some serious heat is heading to the Sierra and is going to park there. Here's to hoping.
