Mt Whitney Zone Forums General Discussion Extra permits for Half Dome and Mt. Whitney!

Had a couple friends drop out from upcoming trips and looking for people in the Bay Area who'd be down to join.

Half Dome - Sep 3-6. Permit for the 4th. I have campground reservations in the valley for 3 nights.

Whitney - Sep 23-26. Permit is day use for the 25th. Driving on 23rd and 26th, acclimatization hike on the 24th.

To the best of my knowledge, Half Dome permits are not transferable. And cancellations aren’t made available on rec.gov as they are for Whitney. They can only be gotten by preseason or daily lottery. Whitney permits technically aren’t transferable, either. But you can get cancellations. It is best to work out a time so that you can pick up a cancelled permit as the other party cancels.

You apparently replied to B&R1038’s post without reading it. B&R1038 isn’t offering to sell or transfer the permit. B&R1038 is “looking for people in the Bay Area who'd be down to join.” That’s 100% legal.

But wouldn’t that actually require physically hiking together?

Yes - and he was asking for folks to join him since his friends dropped out. he's looking for hiking companions, not just folks to take his extra permits.
