Hi
my wife and I are looking to get a ride from Whitney Portal to Tuolumne Meadows on this Tuesday. We are open to options and are willing to pay a bit, but can't afford the 450 dollar shuttle service that is available.

If anyone wants to split that with us we could do it, or was already driving that way and wanted to work something out, we'd be interested. Looking forward the JMT!

thanks alot

Steve,

There is an ESTA (Eastern Sierra Transit Authority) bus out of Lone Pine to Reno every morning, and a YARTS bus from Mammoth to Yosemite every day. They cross paths in Lee Vining, only YARTS leaves Lee Vining 20 minutes before ESMT arrives. (Go figure!) ...I do see YARTS comments saying they do "stop on demand" requests, so you might make a phone-in request.

You might catch the ESTA bus to Lee Vining and try hitching to Tuolumne.

Or you might leave your car in Mammoth and take YARTS to TM. Then on the other end of your trip, hitch down to Lone Pine, spend the night at Whitney Hostel or anywhere else, and catch the ESTA bus to Mammoth and to your car.

Looking at this thread: Shuttle Partners for JMT on July 31 it looks like the ESTA bus only runs week days.

Good luck, both on the transportation and the hike!

ESTA Lone Pine / Reno schedule     ESTA phone#: 760-872-1901   Toll Free: 800-922-1930

YARTS   Toll free: 877-989-2787
YARTS Hwy 120 / Mammoth schedule

due to our time frame, we are thinking of parking in mammoth, hitching to tuolumne (the bus leaves way too early for us to get there in time and we don't have time to spend the night), then taking the bus back up from lone pine to mammoth on the tail end. the one hitch is finding long term parking in Mammoth. Anyone have suggestions. I'm not finding anything on google.
thanks!

I'll find out Monday morning. I may be parking a car there for a week the end of this month.

I'll be calling the Mammoth ranger station: 760.924.5500

I believe people can park up where the shuttle takes people into Devils Postpile. But that is a long way from the 395.

thanks, but i think i'm switching plans
for your own info though, it looks like you can park at the mammoth mountain inn. they have a backpacker's lot from what i've read. so maybe you can use that. I"m not aware of whether or not there is a fee involved. It didn't sound like it from the brief forum clips that i read.
we are gonna shoot for lee vining instead, since its closer to both the 395 and the 120 and an overall shorter distance to hitchike.
thanks for your suggestions. they have been immensely helpful in our planning.

Well good luck on the plans AND the hike.

Once you get back, it would be great if you could let us know how it all worked out.
