The usual hike to Castle Peak (9000+, Tahoe N'tl Forest -- PCT, Donner Pass area)was a little different as I was surprised to see what I thought was snow on the trees. At closer inspection, I saw that it was actually beautiful ice formations about 4" in diameter that were setting in the trees like a mix of hanging chandeliers & ornaments. Whenever the wind would blow, the ice would clank together to sound like crystal goblets during a toast; however, when the wind was a little stronger, those little "ornaments" turned into deadly ice grenades that sounded like broken dishes when they landed, so it was time to skedaddle!
