After some experimentation I have settled on Hammer Nutrition's "Perpetuum" while hiking and "Recoverite" for after hiking. I mix whatever amount of Perpetuum I need for the day into a thick mixture in a Nalgene bottle. I then take small sips of this every 20 minutes and drink clear water out of my bladder. Immediately after I'm done with the hike I drink recoverite and then if camping eat a standard dinner. I'm 55 and since using this nutrition approach feel better during and after my hikes than I have in 15 years.

It is expensive. I buy it online in bulk from Hammer and that cuts the cost down some.

I should mention I avoid a big breakfast before hiking and eat a very simple carb with protein at lunch on long days. Stomach starts to feel uncomfortable empty after 4-5 hours of hiking with nothing to eat. Typically a Bagel with cream cheese.
