I really do want to see northern lights one of these days. The two times that I have been in an area where they might be visible, they weren't on display.

How far north does one need to go to see them?

I've seen them in Wisconsin once - one of those WTF moments when driving home at night. Need to go to Alaska to have a better view

It entirely depends on how far south they come, which in itself, is due to a combination of the strength of the CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) that strikes the earth, the direction the earth's magnetic field is tilted at the time (south is favorable for northern lights, whereas north inhibits them), how far in that direction it is tilted, and whether the CME is directed squarely at earth.

Normally, in our part of the world, most displays of northern lights are visible only well up into Canada (with the top end of the swath beginning at about 20 degrees south of the north magnetic pole, which is currently somewhere on Ellesmere Island). However, sometimes they are visible into southern Canada and the northernmost U.S. states, and less frequently, as far south as the southern states, the Gulf, Florida, or even Southern California. On the rarest of occasions, they have even been seen in Mexico.

Here is a graphic image of where the northern lights are located at the moment I posted this, as well as the intensity.

See also: www.spaceweather.com

Edit: Apparently this image updates with the latest image every time you access this thread/post.
Also, the red arrow indicates where it is currently noon, but without factoring in Daylight Saving Time; so it's one hour off during DSL.

Only 2.5 million views. And 6000 comments!

That's pretty cool. ...but why does the background move in the same pattern in sync with the batter's swing? wink

Edit: Well, the picture doesn't move in sync with the batter -- they must have set that up separately. To see it, play the video and put your mouse pointer on one of the baseballs in the pile. You can see the repeated motion. Nobody could achieve that holding a camera.

I suspected that it might be fake...as do many of the commentators.

And I doubt that his buddy would be standing where he is if it was real.

I sent the video to all of the coaches at the little league and told them that I expected them to have all of the kids hitting like that by the end of the fall season.

Ok, this gets a little bizarre. Someone took that video, and played even more with it:

Ulitmate Batting Practice + Double Rainbow.   Read the "show more" comments below the video.

Then compare it with this one:

Yosemitebear Mountain Giant Double Rainbow 1-8-10 (30 million views) This guy is a bit intense for me.

Check out the awesome horizon line at 2:28 min.
