I am hiking the JMT from South (Mt Whitney) to North on Aug 11 permit date. Really appreciated if I could share a ride from S.F. Bay Area to Whitney. I am flexible on date and time of departure, and willing to pay gasoline expenses.

Please contact me at dowu@dir.ca.gov email.

I have looked into public transit option which is not so good, and with the post 9/11 rules where knife and gas canister is forbidden. How could a JMT hiker not carry a knife, or cooking gas!

Have you checked into Amtrak to Merced, Yarts to Mammoth, ESTA to Lone Pine. Might have trouble with connections same-day, though.

Also, you can purchase the stove fuel in Lone Pine.

Call Whitney Portal Hostel, maybe you could mail the knife, and pick it up there.

Steve C is right....those public transportation options make sense...

I would start first with ESTA to Lone Pine schedule...

Then work on the YARTS from Merced to Mammoth...

and then try to make it fit with an AMTRAK schedule from SF to Merced.

"Logisticalists" like me say "Move forward working backwards."

Journey well...

Do you really think they're going to search you? laugh I've boarded Amtrak with my backpack several times. At most, they don't want me blocking a seat with it.

You may find that Amtrak to Reno, then ESTA, is faster. Pay attention to the days of the week that YARTS and ESTA run.
