Hi All - First question here! I am new to Mt. Whitney and my son and I are climbing Whitney Train Jun 25. Up to Trail Camp on the 25th. Summit and back to Trail Camp on the 26th (maybe go lower if we have energy). Finish on the 27th. I'm torn about what to do about boots and spikes based on crazy weather this year. Hoping to use "non-alpine/non-mountaineering" boots and carry mini-spikes. Not sure what you experts and those of you who have already climbed this season. Looking for thoughts and specific recommendations (brands, models, shank, etc.). Thank you!

All during June, people will be using the chute, west of the switchbacks. You need an ice axe and crampons, with boots stiff enough to handle crampons.

And you need the skills to use them.

Thank you for the info Steve. So will we be using the Chute because it is the only option...will the switchbacks be unpassable? Also, can you recommend the right boots for the job in that case?

Switchbacks are buried in snow right now. The only way up is the chute. My understanding is the only boots that will work with crampons are mountaineering boots. REI has rentals. Boots, crampons, ice axe & helmet. You can rent as a set. But like others have said it’s important to have experience in using them. You don’t want your first time out on Whitney.
