It's been a while so the road may have changed considerably, but in 2015 I drove to the trailhead in a 1998 Mazda 626 and and scraped a rock once on the way out. In 2016 my friend drove her circa 2008 Chevy Malibu and didn't scrape anything. No idea whether the road has degraded in a meaningful way since then.
